ABOUT TOM
My Journey to Becoming a Golf Performance Fitness Coach:
I grew up playing golf in New Paltz, NY introduced to the game by my father. I took lessons with the local PGA professionals Larry Fury and John Magaletta. I also played for my high school golf team. I was not what you would say a great golfer but, I knew I had some talent and there those time when I’d be on the golf course practicing by myself and hitting shots that nobody saw but, were excellent shots. I would look around to see if anybody saw but, no! It was in those moments that I built my passion for golf because although no one was around to see, those shots produced indescribable feelings that coincide with love for the game. I knew then that I would keep pursuing great shots! I continued with my desire to hit more and more of these shots and I certainly hit some, but also found that I hit my fair share of SHANKS! I never let go of the belief that I could continue to grow with the game and become very good and therefore decreasing overall shanks/ round!
Flash forward 20 years and I’m still pursuing the perfect round. I recently entered back into amateur competitive golf with the goals continuing to fine tune parts of my game and continually lower my handicap! As an athletic trainer, strength and conditioning coach I had always applied the components of my education into my life including daily fitness. Optimizing fitness components of flexibility, mobility, functional strength, and power coupled with optimal nutrition and recovery including sleep and mindfulness. What I see as the greatest gain from fitness is the ability to play pain free, distance added to my shots, and the ability to play the full round without fatigue being a factor. Much like I’m seeking the perfect round, I sought continuing education in my field of athletic training and performance looking for all the “secrets” of performance that I could add to my regimen. Along the way I saw that Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) was offering an educational system of certifications in golf performance fitness. I completed their first course The TPI physical Screen in 2019 at the Cleveland Clinic. I was floored and excited at the same time as TPI had blended what are the two pillars of my educational background, athletic training and strength and conditioning. TPI created a system to screen movements specific to the golf swing, improve those movements with corrective exercise. Adding on fitness specific exercises to a properly functioning body as well as power specific exercises can help the golfer create more distance, accuracy, and consistency in their game.
My promise is to bring the best in the field of Golf performance to my coaching every day!
My goal is to bring my passion to you and coach you through a system that will support your best self and your best golf game. With my background in Athletic training, I have been assessing and treating injuries for 16 years. There is one constant in all injuries and pain and that is the body’s inability to withstand forces. My number one priority when coaching golf performance is to help the golfer create a fitness regimen that will help their golf performance while greatly reducing risk for pain and injury.
